Catrine Val
The female wisdom

The Changing Room
Portraits of Women in Contemporary Britain by Catrine Val
17 January – 9 March, 2019
Please join us for a small and informal launch event at the Storefront from 6-8pm on Thursday 17 January 2019
Inspired by Luton’s unique diversity and by the fluid relationships between the town’s many communities and cultures
artist Catrine Val has been commissioned by Departure Lounge to create a unique series of portraits of the town’s women.
Based on the question ‘who are you, and who do you want to be’? Catrine launches the project with a highly individual series
of photo-shoots in locations across Luton and Bedfordshire with women from all walks of life.
We invite you and a guest to join us for a viewing of these first portraits which mark the opening of this evolving exhibition.

If you or someone you know would like to participate in this portraiture project, please visit
The exhibition will conclude with a closing celebration on
International Women’s Day Friday 8 March

Upon successful completion of her BA, Val attended post-graduate studies at the Kunsthochschule für Medien in Cologne. She was the assistant of Valie Export for four years. After graduating, she worked for as an assistant lecturer in the field of virtual reality at the Art Academy in Kassel. She has worked extensively in and around semantics and etymology, and has collaborated with women thinkers in India, South America, Asia and Europe.
